"i'm scared"

Day tugged on my elbow and softly uttered “I’m scared” to me before we made our way up to the school stage.

I was genuinely surprised: He wasn’t alone.

He was going to be part of a troupe of nearly 30 kids singing onstage and they were all singing together. He didn’t have to do anything unusual.

He said he was afraid of facing the entire school.

(The troupe was presenting a farewell item, "Edelweiss" to the departing principal as school closes for the year)

So it’s pretty certain: He’s a shy one!
